Headshot photos
(by someone who understands)
Headshots are one of the most important marketing tools we have. Our headshots not only show what we look like, but they also communicate to casting directors or clients who we are. They’re a glimpse into our personality, our attitude, and they are a huge insight into our level of professionalism.
So, how do we take a great headshot, especially when being in front of a camera can be so awkward? The trick is finding a photographer you gel with. I’ve been an actor for almost thirty years, so I know what it’s like on that side of the lens. I’ve had some horrible pictures taken because I was intimidated, nervous, and unsure of what I was supposed to be doing. I've felt uncomfortable being posed by so-called “artists,” and I've felt powerless over the outcome of pictures I paid for! I don’t want anyone to ever feel like that. Our headshot session is going to be a collaboration. We’ll discuss what you want to achieve with your pictures, then we’ll put on some tunes and start having fun. And most importantly, we’ll be doing it as a team. I look forward to working with you! |

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect from our session?
First, we'll email, text, or use our phones like phones, to discuss what your goals are for the pictures. We'll talk about what you should bring, we'll schedule our date and time, and I'll address any questions you may have. On the day of the shoot, we'll look at the clothes you brought and we'll figure out the different looks we want to try out. Once we're all set, I'll take some starter pics to make sure all the technical stuff is in order, then I'll spin the monitor around to get your opinion. (I told you! We're a team!) Once we're feeling good about lighting, the goofing off will commence! We'll shoot several different clothing/background options, until we're positive we've got at least a handful of winners.
What should I bring?
For actors, I suggest bringing several different changes of clothes that suggest different "types" you see for yourself (parent, professional, blue collar, leading man, etc... we can discuss this in more detail before our session). For my corporate clients, it's pretty much the same thing, our goal being to capture your attitude and personality. For most shots, solid colors or very simple patterns are preferred. We want the shot to put the focus on you, not your clothes. You may want to bring along your hair and makeup gear for potential touch ups, unless we schedule a stylist. Other than that, what you bring is up to you! Bottle of water, maybe? Scotch? Comfy slippers? Your call.
Will you travel to me?
Sure! I generally like to work in an area where I can control the lighting, so traveling means moving gear, which means more time, which means there's likely going to be an additional fee. That said, I'm a reasonable and flexible guy, and I'll do my best to accommodate you and your budget.
What's involved in retouching?
So here's the deal... I won't change your eye color or get rid of the big mole on your face or make you look thirty years younger. What I will do is clear up blemishes, freshen up your eyes, knock out a stray hair or two, maybe brighten your teeth a little, clean the Oreo crumbs off your shirt... that kind of stuff. I want you to look like you, but I want you to look like you on your best day.
